I’m
sure you already know this is one of the most collectible of the
early 1950’s Mercedes Benz models. To say that these cars are rare
and very difficult to find would be a real understatement. Very
seldom does one of these ever come up for sale anymore. Furthermore,
this particular body style, called the cabriolet “A” is the most
desirable of all of
the body styles that were built.
It’s
very difficult to find one in this condition too. Naturally, most of
the original production is long since gone. Over the last twenty
years of so it seems that unfortunately we see less and less of
these. So many of them have gone to Europe or the Far East where
they are very highly sought after. Now, on the very rare occasion
when you might come across one, it’s usually a complete “basket
case” needing everything and missing a lot of the important parts
that are almost impossible to get
. Once in a while you’ll see a
beautifully restored example for a lot of money. A really nice 170
or 220 Cabriolet “A” can easily be priced in the one hundred and
twenty-five thousand dollars (plus) range these days. I heard about
a “beyond nice” show car recently selling for
one hundred and seventy-five thousand dollars.
This
one is a car to restore and it’s definitely time for a restoration.
However, this car starts, runs, drives and stops, etc. right now,
which is a tremendous advantage. Now, I have to admit that it
may only run well enough to drive it on a trailer but at least it
does run. It’s also one of the most solid and complete old
Cabriolets I’ve seen in many years
. If you want to buy one to restore, it
doesn’t get much better then this. If you’ve been down this road
before and restored cars previously then you
already know how important that is.
The
structural wood was always the weakness in these cars. Usually on an
un-restored example like this one, the doors will drop a huge
amount. You literally have to fully pick them up to close them. I’ve
seen them drop so much that they’ll actually hit the fenders &
running boards. This car is very different! It has one of the least
amounts of “door drop” that I’ve seen in
years for an un-restored old cabriolet.
Another great advantage with this particular
car is that it’s amazingly solid. Although not totally rust-free,
it’s one of the best I’ve seen for an un-restored car in
MANY
years.
I have many additional photos of the chassis that I can
email you, if you’re really interested.
Originally, this car was painted a very
desirable color combination of dark blue with gray interior. This
170 would be a beautiful car
restored, especially in the original colors.
A
chance to find one as good as this one to restore is
a very rare opportunity these days.
